A CBD company has launched an on-demand car service people who can’t afford Parking or don’t need to drive every day.
Charterdrive.com has placed a fleet of small smart-cars and five-door Smart cars at various locations around the CBD and Kings Cross, which can be booked on the internet.
Director Paul Reichman set up the company “as an alternative to people owning their own cars”.
To access the car, customer swipes a membership card against the scanner in the windscreen.
Keys are kept in the glovebox and on-board computers track mileage.
Cars are located in the CBD at the Wynyard Lane car park off Margaret St, the Kings Cross car park in ward Ave and the Splash car wash on Darlinghurst St.
There is a joining fee to cover RTA and insurance checks.
CBD members charter a car for $10 an hour and an extra 20c per Kilometre driven.
Computer track usage by the minute so drivers are only charged for the exact time they have the car.
Take-home drivers are charged $40 plus 20c per Kilometre driven, or $90 plus manage on weekends.
Reichman plans to roll out other pick-up points at its speaking with Sydney City Council to try to secure street parking pick-up points.
He said a similar service was “on the verge of going main stream in the US”.
“One US Company has 30,000 members and 500 cars, but they’re planning to expand that 20,000 cars,” he said.
